In 1904 George Gutchess founded the Gutchess Lumber Company on a small
farm in
New York State. Powered by a wood-fired steam tractor, the mill
supplied lumber for the
farm communities of New York State's Southern
Tier. Oxen and horses were used as the muscle to skid logs
to the mill and haul lumber to customers.
For several decades
Gutchess Lumber™
continued as a local lumber operation until
coming under the leadership of George's grandson and successor, Homer C.
Gutchess.
Homer was instrumental in building
Gutchess Lumber™
into a leading manufacturer
of
kiln dried Northern hardwood lumber.
During
his tenure in the hardwood industry, Homer would greatly expand
the scope of the
business, successfully overcoming significant
changes in markets and
manufacturing
techniques.
In 2002 Homer
orchestrated a
transition from a family run firm to an employee owned
company. Homer's
work ethic
and dedication to quality
continue
to guide all
aspects of operations here at Gutchess.
A lot has changed during the
past century. We have traded our horses for forklifts and
now sell a wide range of products to a global market. But no matter what changes this
century brings, we promise to deliver the same consistently fine quality products,
with the same superior customer service, you've come to expect from us.
At
Gutchess Lumber™
we are ready for the challenges of the 21st century.
