Northern Shagbark Hickory

Carya ovata var

Northern Shagbark Hickory is found in the northern Appalachians of the United States, normally on upland slopes, frequently in mixed hardwood forest types dominated by oaks. It is distinct from Southern Shagbark Hickory (or “Carolina Shagbark Hickory”) which is a separate species or variety. Its light sapwood and brown heartwood make for distinctive contrasts.

Product Information

We produce Northern Shagbark Hickory in 4/4 thickness. Packages are sorted according to National Hardwood Lumber Association rules as F&B or FAS&FAS1F (Face and better) grade, #1 common grade, #2 common grade, and #3 common grade.

Harvesting Region

Our Hickory comes from naturally regenerating forests in the north Appalachian region within about 100 miles (62 km) of our manufacturing facilities. The species is rated by NatureServe as secure in its conservation status.

Relative Working & Physical Properties

Hickory is hard, dense and heavy but the tough resilient properties of the wood make it suitable for products subject to impact and stress. It is used for cabinets, tool handles, axles and shafts, bows, skis, paddles, and flooring.
